Adrian Mutu won’t train with Fiorentina after all

Il Fenomeno is back in the purple! Well, at least he was supposed to be training with the team
UPDATE:
Il fenomeno himself said to the Romanian website wowbiz.ro that he had to turn down the opportunity to go back to Fiorentina, to stay close to his mother, who’s in the hospital.
Forza Adrian, we hope your mom gets better.

In the midst of all the drama about Neto and his refusal to sign the new contract, one of the greatest Fiorentina player of the Della Valle era, Adrian Mutu is coming back to his beloved team. Just to train, though, for now. But who knows, there is always hope we’ll see another Luca Toni situation. According to his friend, FIFA agent Virgil Cofescu, Mutu himself has asked Andrea Della Valle if he could train with the viola, and should be in the squad as of today. Whether he will actually sign any contract with Fiorentina will be up to Vincenzo Montella.

Mutu has been without club since September, when he rescinded his contract with Romanian side Petrolul where he wasn’t a regular first team player anyway. He was supposed to play in Indian Superleague, but that didn’t work out either. All that makes it highly unlikely that he will be up to compete in Serie A again at the age of 35, but we can hope. In the meantime, we can enjoy this:

Parma vs. FIORENTINA: Match Preview

La Viola begin 2015 away to the struggling Ducali.
Serie A comes storming back this midweek with a round of midweek matches, and that means our beloved Fiorentina will look to begin a charge towards the European spots by shrugging off the January woes of the past two seasons. January is easily Vincenzo Montella’s worst month (in terms of points per game) since taking charge of la Viola, but this is as friendly a fixture as one could wish for the beginning of a new year. Fiorentina have been excellent on the road this season having won all of their last four, while Parma are winless since defeating Inter 2-0 at home back on November 1st. Roberto Donadoni has held onto his job thanks to improved performances in recent matches, but there remains a quiet panic in “casa Gialloblu.”
All the same, here are 3 things that should keep us all a bit nervous before this one: 1) Fiorentina never make things easy 2) Fiorentina hasn’t won in their last 6 tries at the Stadio Ennio Tardini di Parma, last getting 3 points in 2007. And finally 3) Antonio Cassano will be well rested, really loves scoring against us, and hasn’t found the net in the last two matches against Fiorentina.
So, now that we are all nice and relaxed…
Vincenzo Montella only appears to have one serious personnel doubt about the lineup against the bottom side in Serie A, and that’s in goal. L’aeroplanino is expected to start Ciprian Tatarusanu after Neto’s declared intention to leave, either now or in the summer for free, but the coach could still persevere with what has been the team’s number one all season; Neto was apparently the “starter” in training on Monday. Borja Valero drops out of the side due to yellow card accumulation, while Alberto Aquilani is unlikely to start due to a minor injury. Jasmin Kurtic will almost definitely start, with David Pizarro and the high-flying Matias Fernandez completing the midfield three. The defense should remain unchanged, although Manuel Pasqual may challenge Marcos Alonso for a starting spot on Tuesday. Juan Cuadrado is expected to once again partner Mario Gomez in attack.

As far as Roberto Donadoni’s men, he has recovered some important pieces all across the pitch, but will still be without tricky winger Jonathan Biabiany and striker Ishak Belfodil. Gabriel Paletta should be back in form after looking very rusty in his return from lengthy injury, and will maybe improve the Parma defense. Donadoni is expected to favor a 3-5-2 to host Fiorentina, mirroring Montella but opting for a more “solid” version. “We’ll need players with energy to burn” said Donadoni in his pre-match press conference.
Hopefully Fiorentina will look the fresher side and continue their imperious away form. A win keeps us 3 points off of 3rd place Lazio. It’s all there to play for. Forza Viola!
Projected Lineups:
Parma (3-5-2): Mirante; Costa, Paletta, Lucarelli; Rispoli, J. Mauri, Lodi, Gobbi, De Ceglie; Cassano, Palladino
FIORENTINA (3-5-2): Tatarusanu; Savic, Gonzalo, Basanta; Joaquin, Mati, Pizarro, Kurtic, Alonso; Cuadrado, Gomez

Poll
Lorenzo finally figured out the bug in his browser that prevented him from making polls (happy 2015). How dumb is he?

Who?

Lorenzo is really really dumb

If Lorenzo were a cartoon character, he’d be Elmer Fudd when he can’t recognize Bugs Bunny dressed as a lady rabbit

Really not that dumb.

Lorenzo is dumber than Chiellini is ugly. AW SNAP

If dumb were a color, cabinets.

I’m just glad that polls are back.

Fiorentina confirm that Neto won’t renew, will be put on trading block

The situation has, thankfully, been resolved. But it still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of Fiorentina fans.
It’s a bit unusual for a club to officially announce that a new deal won’t happen. Usually either a renewal eventually comes through or the player is shuffled off in the transfer window (or, in Fiorentina’s case, sometimes players leave for free… Looking at you Riccardo Montolivo). But Fiorentina took the unusual step of confirming today that Norberto Murara Neto was not going to renew with club.
In a brief statement posted on their website, the club announced the news, mainly focusing on the player’s perspective. Neto’s statement (as told by Fiorentina) is pretty cut and dry: “Neto doesn’t want to renew… he is sure that he has definitely concluded his professional experience with the club.” The Brazilian keeper also emphasized that he is not leaving because of “the economic aspect” but rather because “he wants to decide autonomously his own future.”

The fact that Fiorentina was never going to be a part of his future is quite a low blow to fans who, like myself, defended Neto when he struggled, and cheered with great enthusiasm when he confirmed himself to be a maturing, talented keeper. His passion on the field and his attachment to the group in pictures and interviews away from the field, have all apparently belied an indifference towards the club and fans who supported him; he will almost certainly be whistled and abused by Fiorentina fans if he were to start the next game in goal. In fact, part of the rationale behind this unusual official statement from the club may be to deprive Vincenzo Montella of the option of continuing to start Neto while he is negotiating with other clubs.
Many fans and journalists have already come forward to accuse Fiorentina of mismanaging the contract situation, but I would argue that in this instance (unlike so many others), the Viola bosses made the right moves. They awaited to see if a young and certainly inconsistent keeper would live up to the promise seen by the coach, then moved to reward him with a handsome new contract once the promise was confirmed. It is only partially their fault if the player capitalizes on the faith shown by a nurturing club to leap to a more lucrative home. Yes we should have done more to secure our assets, but few could have anticipated the change in Neto’s fortunes in just 12 short months. He should, maybe, have a longer memory too.
For several months now, many clubs have been rumored to be circling around the 25 year old, whose contract expires this summer. Liverpool, Juventus, and Roma are the chief pretenders for his signature, with both Liverpool and Roma in clear need of a better keeper who is more courageous off his line. Undoubtedly offers from clubs offering higher wages and potential Champions League action has played a role in Neto’s decision. The rest of the month will now certainly be a free for all, with Fiorentina looking to unload the now-unwanted Neto to the highest bidder before the end of the transfer window.

5 (Fiorentina) things to keep an eye on during the holiday break

Just because la Viola isn’t playing for a couple weeks doesn’t mean we fans get much down time.
As we all recline in a post-holiday stupor thanks to food, drink, and spending time with our families, we must still reflect on the important things. Namely, Fiorentina. To help you reorder your priorities accordingly, here are our 5 Things To Watch as Serie A luxuriates in its infuriating winter break.
1) Contract wrangling. Fiorentina have 8 senior contracts expiring in the summer, including those of Alberto Aquilani, Norberto Neto, David Pizarro, and Manuel Pasqual. Pasqual and Neto are already being courted by other clubs under suspicion that new deals may not be agreed, while Aquilani looks more and more likely to be allowed to walk away for free in the summer. Add into that mix the fact that Khouma Babacar and Federico Bernardeschi have contracts that expire in 2016, and it becomes clear that Fiorentina legal retainer will be kept quite busy in meetings this winter. Situations appear to change week to week, but we’ll all be listening closely for new whispers coming from Florence.
2) Adorable holiday player vacation/holiday pictures. ‘Nuff said.

3) Keeping half an eye on Tottenham Hotspur’s form. This is premature as of yet, but since the Premier League does the fun thing of continuing to play through the holidays, Fiorentina fans can watch Spurs play some big matches in the festive period. They host Manchester United in the first kick off tomorrow, and then play league-topping Chelsea in a New Year’s Day London derby. Do be sure to check out the excellent work by the good folks over at Cartilage Free Captain as well!
4) Whether we can offload Ilicic for someone who is, well, good. I realize now (after my last post on the Slovenian potentially departing in January) that there are still some Iliciites among the other, clean brethren below the line. May the Lord Batistuta forgive you for your sins.
In all seriousness though, it’s hard to deny that Ilicic isn’t having much (positive) impact on our first team, and with his big salary and still-for-a-while-decent market value, is the most obvious move to free up some space in January. Vincenzo Montella apparently wants a winger and a striker in the window, and Ilicic moving on would open the door to bring one or both of these players in. The most exciting Ilicic-related-rumor so far is that Roma were possibly open to a swap deal for Alessandro Florenzi, which got me in quite a tizzy despite it being very farfetched. Udinese forward Luis Muriel is another “hot” name that could be swapped with our ex-Palermo enigma. Gazzetta dello Sport has, however, reported that Ilicic has to date turned down all offers from other clubs “despite wanting to leave,” blocking more Fiorentina transfer planning.
However this situation resolves itself, the winter mercato rumor machine is already trundling into 2nd gear. Companionship is the best way to survive the absurd acceleration towards the cliff of stupidity.
5) Updates on Giuseppe Rossi’s health. Yes folks, that’s right, 4 whole months have flown by already since Rossi last went under the knife on his cursed knee, and Pepito is heading back to Vail, Colorado in the coming days to do a final check on his knee’s rehabilitation. If he is given the all clear, he could begin working on the field again as early as the New Year.
Watch this space in between wonderful holiday celebrations everyone, and forza viola!

Europa League draw preview and chit-chat

Who will Fiorentina get in the first knockout round of Europa League?
Fiorentina won group K of Europa League and is now awaiting the opposition in the first knockout phase. Among the potential rivals in the round of sixteen are (sleepy) giants like Liverpool, a super-rich Tottenham, three times European champions Ajax, Sevilla etc. There are also some less intimidating teams that Fiorentina can encounter, such as Danish side Aalborg, Swiss Young Boys or Turkish Trabzonspor.
Fiorentina is among the sixteen seeded teams. That means that we cannot play against other seeded teams, like Everton, Athletic Bilbao, Borussia Monchengladbach. It also means we are going to play first game away from home and have the second leg at Artemio Franchi. Another rule is, we cannot meet other Italian teams (Torino or Roma, who are among the unseeded ones) or Guingamp which was in our group.

So, what is the worst possible draw for Fiorentina?
We’d go with Tottenham. Although possibly not stronger than Liverpool, on paper, Tottenham looks like the team that might care more about Europa League. While at it, we wouldn’t mind avoiding the Reds, as well as the likes of Sevilla and Wolfsburg. And Dnipro, just because it’s a long trip and they are, in fact, a tough team. We’d like to meet Villareal at some point, so Borja Valero, Gonzalo Rodriguez and Mati Fernandez could meet up with old friends and reminisce about the good ol’ days, but perhaps not this early. In the final maybe? Cool.
What’s the best possible draw?
Aalborg. Not to underestimate the Danes, but they are the weakest team in the competition. We wouldn’t mind getting Young Boys either, although they showed they can be tough against Napoli. Ajax is a great club, and a team full of talent that wouldn’t be easy to beat at all, but it would be a chance for revenge for a 2009, when they kicked us out.
Possible opponents:
Vilarreal (Spain)Tottenham Hotspur (England)Celtic (Scotland)PSV Eindhoven (Holland)Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine)Sevilla (Spain)Wolfsburg (Germany)Aalborg  (Denmark)Young Boys (Switzerland)Trabzonspor (Turkey)Anderlecht (Belgium)Ajax Amsterdam (Holland)Liverpool (England)
