Juan Jesus to miss next four matches, Ranocchia and Kovacic out against Genoa

Juan Jesus has been penalized with a four-match suspension after elbowing Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini during yesterday’s match. Andrea Ranocchia and Mateo Kovacic will also serve 1-match suspensions in light of their respective bookings on T…

This Dog’s Adorable Defect Saved His Life

Kiss the boxer’s defect is what makes him special.

Meet Kiss.

Courtesy Michayla Lupien

He’s an adorable — VERY ADORABLE — 4-year-old boxer pup who was born with a neurological disorder that prevents him from retracting his tongue.

Courtesy Michayla Lupien

Yup, his tongue hangs out 24/7.

According to his vet, Nancy Bureau, Kiss has two rare nerve disorders, which disturb both his tongue motion and the facial nerve on the right side of his face. They’re both nonfatal disorders and don’t put him in any pain.

Kiss was living in a kill shelter and on the list to be euthanized when Dawn Korres spotted him in a Los Angeles, California, shelter.

Villarreal-Real Sociedad Copa del Rey GAMETHREAD

Lineup is out. Vietto and Cheryshev on the bench
So we loan Cani to Atleti, and immediately announce a lineup with Rukavina at left wing.  My sense is Marcelino wants to keep this tight for awhile, but it is an awfully defensive midfield.
Asenjo; Mario, Gabriel, Dorado, Jaume Costa; Rukavina, Pina, J dos Santos, Moi; G dos Santos, Gerard.

Real Sociedad lineup to follow.
And it is: Zubikarai; C. MArtinez, Mikel, I. MArtinez, Yuri; Markel, Granero, Pardo; Xabi Prieto, Hervias, Finnbogason

Villarreal 1-0 Real Sociedad: a thin lead to defend at the Anoeta

Before a sparse crowd at El Madrigal, the suddenly Cani-less Yellow Submarine totally dominated a turgid match, but the narrow 1-0 win leaves all to play for in the return leg.
Villarreal got their win, got their clean sheet, but will be disappointed not to have scored a second goal on a day when visitors Real Sociedad were completely punchless.
The Submarine should have taken the lead in the first half, but first Gio dos Santos couldn’t make contact with a perfect cross from Gerard Moreno, and then his brother shot wide from the top of the box with the net gaping.   La Real, meanwhile, created absolutely nothing.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half crawled along, and substitutions were clearly required, both to   keep everyone awake and suggest that someone, somewhere, might score.  The visitors blinked first, bringing on Canales and Agurruetxe for the ineffective Finnbogason and Hervias.  Villarreal responded with Bruno and Cheryshev for Jonathan dos Santos and Antonio Rukavina, who actually wasn’t that bad on the right wing and had little defending to do.
The subs–Villarreal’s, anyway–proved to be useful, as about 10 minutes later Chery scored from a perfect Bruno diagonal pass, the Russian’s shot beating the keeper and going in off the far post.  In the remaining 20 minutes, Villarreal forced a number of corners, but created nothing from them; Gerard Moreno nearly got on the end of a cross or two, and Vietto (who replaced Gio with 15 minutes left) just couldn’t get to a Cheryshev cross that could have resulted in a goal.  And La Real, meanwhile, created absolutely nothing, unless you count a Canales yellow card for throwing the ball away and generally acting unhappy.
Of course, last year these two teams drew 1-1 at the Anoeta (though that was the first leg) so maybe a 1-0 lead will be enough, but I can’t help thinking one more Villarreal goal in the tie, whether tonight or in the Anoeta, ought to see us through.  Though I expect David Moyes will go for a more attacking side, probably with Vela, in the return leg.
The major worry for Villarreal is Giovani dos Santos.  He looks a shadow of the player we had last year, and the slim crowd at El Madrigal was visibly happy when Vietto replaced him.  Pina, Jaume Costa, Gerard Moreno, and Moi Gomez all played well, but Cheryshev and Bruno came on to get the job done.
Endavant Villarreal!!

WeekEnd Links: 62 days until Tempe

It’s 2015, and 62 days filled with hope and expectations. 62 days until the first game of Spring!
Welcome to the year 2015, everyone. It usually takes me about two weeks for my muscle memory to get used to typing and writing that new final digit in the year. So if I eff up, just let it slide. Why? Because you and I are on a journey together to cast our gaze beyond the storm of college football bowl mania and pro football playoffs, eager in the expectation of spring training baseball, which is now just a matter of weeks away. Slip away and imagine the sweet smell of fresh-cut grass, the snap-snap sound of gloves catching baseballs as the players warm up, and off in the distance your eyes are mesmerized by some coach awakens the stadium with a rhythmic whack of one infield grounder after another. 62 days from now is the first spring game of the Halos. Pitchers and catchers report in just 48 days, position players in only 53. It’s a blessed new year.
And, by the way, strange things tend to happen in MLB seasons that end in the number 5. Especially to the Angels . You know, 2005, and before that there was 1995. 1985 was our 25th Anniversary Season, so enjoy yourself some Dick Enberg. 1975 just sucked, so don’t bother clicking here.  Which could be said, I suppose, about 1965. Buckle up, boys and girls!
Amazingly, a couple of things occurred in the world of sports yesterday that had absolutely nothing to do with holiday bowl football. I’m not complaining or anything. That’s some fun stuff, right there. But, here we go, short form linkage. The real stuff will return next Friday…
______________________________________________________________________________________________
We are pretty much down to Shields/Scherzer Watch – 2015. Apparently Scherzer’s price is plummeting, possibly all the way back to Detroit Tiger territory……….Although nothing of substance is in the works at the moment, the Halos remain among the Max list of possibilities, whatever that is worth………..Shields, on the other hand, has everyone totally confused.
This is news to me. Probably to Jerry Dipoto, too. If you asked anybody where the hole was in the Angels’ lineup, the answer would jump out: SECOND BASE! But after all the moves Dipoto has made over the past 12 months, who would have guessed “bullpen”? Ummm, one guy, maybe?
Pretty cool, this. Only five guys in the American League have a longer tenure with their club than our Erick Aybar has with Arte.
All this chatter and excitement about this off-seasons hot stove action? Well, maybe it’s not such a bog deal after all. Maybe it never is.  “By devoting attention to free agents and veteran trade targets, teams chase after an expensive subset of players…whose win production fundamentally costs more than that of cost-controlled young talent…Front offices are finally realizing this, which is a big reason why we’re seeing more talent locked into long-term contracts at a younger age, and why, consequently, fewer meaningful stars get to peddle their wares during hot stove season.” Whoops.
Hall of Fame Tidbit: Baseball Prospectus puts up a pretty good ballot, but the really cool thing here is to notice what happens when you lift the 10-player ballot limit.
Ten 5-tool players today, only 3 are solid, and only 1 is non-debatable. Guess. Go ahead. Guess who…
H/T to Uni-Watch: Fantastic photos (here and here) of gorgeous vintage baseball scoreboards. Not the jumbotron era stuff. The Mel’s Plumbing & Piping sort of stuff.

MondoLinks: 45 days until pitchers & catchers report!

The surest method to sweep forever from your memory the names of the 4 teams that lost the 2014 LDS’ just 3 months prior is to realize that 2015 baseball kicks off less than 2 months hence…and here we are!

Well, that’s it. the holidays are all done and over. Everything is tucked back up in the attic for the year. The house is clean and comparatively bare in the chill. I even had a chance to squeeze in a week’s worth of nasty head cold through all that, something that has impeded my ability to properly enjoy my Heady Topper.
Now I can get back on track with normal Friday/Monday posts. If only I could shake some news out of the sleeping world of baseball…
_____________

Elsewhere in the Heavens of Anaheim: One must wonder how the enigmatic mind of Josh Hamilton will react to learning that the official scribe of the LA Angels has freely written that Hambone should not expect to stick around any longer than absolutely necessary………..”Oh please” cries Dan Haren, “please don’t make me throw baseballs so far away from my fan…uh…fans!” Note to whomever it is with the duty today to wake 5thStarter out of his daydreams: don’t……………..The KC Royals just sucked up ex-Halo reliever Ryan Madson. Normally, I would make some insinuation concerning a desire to snatch some of our 2014 karma. But when one considers how many humans, some of them actual players, Jerry Dipoto has rolled through our roster in the past year it’s pretty hard to avoid an ex-Halo anymore………….

Around Baseball: We will lead off with a story that is sure to change minute-by-minute. In fact, in the intervening hours between when I compose this and today’s Links even post news may have already rendered this report obsolete. But word from Ken Rosenthal is that James Shields has a 5-year, $110MM offer on the table right now, from a team as yet to be named. And all of baseball is a-twitter………..On the same subject, Jim Bowden – not to be confused with the ever-accurate Jim Bowden who inhabits some parallel universe – tweets that the Marlins are currently in hot pursuit of Shields…………..Not specific to baseball, but germane to the sporting world, ESPN anchor Stuart Scott passed away yesterday, losing his battle with cancer. As a survivor myself, godspeed Mr. Scott. May you rest in peace…………..Just to remind you all, tomorrow the BBWAA HoF voting results will be posted. Should be fun. Always is……………I have said it before, and will say it again, perhaps the most beautiful part of the game of baseball, unlike the other major sports, is that the same rules apply no matter how important the game, or how important the moment.
